You'll find it about 160 kilometres from Sydney and about 35 kilometres from Newcastle.
Maitland history
Founded in 1820 as the point to unload and distribute goods from the Hunter River, Maitland is still bustling with activity and provides lots of things to do for both approximately 60,000 locals and its visitors.
Maitland heritage
In Maitland, you can learn more of its history on the Maitland Heritage Walk.
You can also explore its museums, such as the Maitland Museum and Grossman House, a townhouse built in the 1870s that shows Maitland as one of the most commercial cities in Australia in the 19th Century.
After you've breathed in Maitland's heritage, end your day with a saunter through its art galleries, including the Maitland Regional Art Gallery and the Maitland City Art Gallery.
